This interactive 1-hour workshop is designed for academic librarians at all levels—from front desk staff and teaching librarians to directors—who want to walk away with tools to communicate the value of library services. Every library professional has an audience and daily opportunities to tell compelling stories about their impact and importance. This session focuses on harnessing specific data, professional ethics, and audience awareness to craft truthful and persuasive messages.
Facilitated by Mackenzie Picaro-Davison MLIS, the workshop guides participants through a hands-on template to help identify their top priorities, biggest barriers, daily audiences, and key decision-makers (their “purse-string” audience). National, state, and local examples are embedded in the template, allowing attendees to return to references after the session, alongside their own plans. Mack will share her own experiences and some of the key takeaways with which she’s experimented, gleaned from recent professional developments in data storytelling, advocacy, and marketing, as well as coursework she completed in 2024, with help of a grant from the Northern New York Library Network, on Library Leadership & Management from Syracuse University.
By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a mostly completed messaging template customized to their unique context and four practical steps to take for specific messaging and advocacy.
All for whom this might be useful are welcome. This session will be recorded. Please register to receive the recording. Email amy@nnyln.org with any questions.
