An intentional onboarding process is essential in welcoming in a new colleague after hire, while also positively setting the stage for a library’s investment in the employee experience. This session will explore a number of strategies for effective onboarding, including: communications for preparing new hires and their future colleagues for their arrival, timelines and documentation for supporting team integration, buddy programs for cultivating broader community support, and other long-term activities for strengthening employee engagement and retention. Whether you’re a library working towards establishing or enhancing your onboarding practices, or a hiring manager interested in activities you can individually adopt to welcome in a new team member, this session will offer some concrete practices and ideas for consideration.

Supervisors and staff from all types of institutions—museums, archives, academic libraries, public libraries, and more—are welcome to join. The session will NOT be recorded, though all slides and handouts will be made available to registrants. Ample time will be provided for Q&A, and feel free to submit your questions for the presenter in advance via the registration form. This is the second in a series, sponsored by the Empire State Library Network, on select human resources topics. Please email amy@nnyln.org with questions.
