Job Description:

Description of Department: Penfield Library is a dynamic, innovative, and learning-centered environment serving students, faculty, and staff at SUNY Oswego. The Library supports campus curriculum, teaching, and research, with a liaison program that provides collection development, specialized reference, and information literacy instruction in all curricular areas. The Library is a member of the SUNY Library Consortium as well as the ACRL Diversity Alliance (http://www.ala.org/acrl/issues/diversityalliance). Staffing consists of sixteen full-time faculty and professionals, six adjunct faculty, and fifteen classified staff. The Library is in a time of change, adjusting workflows and roles with a newly implemented library services platform, reexamining our organizational structure in the face of numerous retirements, exploring new ways of engaging with faculty and new campus partnerships, and planning for future building renovations.

Description of Responsibilities:

The Assistant Library Director will be part of a three-person leadership team that includes the Library Director and the Associate Library Director. The Assistant Library Director will lead reference, instruction (information literacy and digital literacy) and subject-liaison services in a highly collaborative and collegial environment, and will have a key role in reassessing instruction, reference, and liaison roles to expand beyond traditional models. This is a 12-month, full-time tenure track librarian faculty position with administrative responsibilities at the rank of Associate Librarian.

The Assistant Library Director will also:

  • Provide vision and leadership for initiatives in reference and instruction and associated liaison services, fostering a culture of collaboration and communication.
  • Oversee ongoing assessment of reference and instruction services.
  • Participate in hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluation of librarians and staff.
  • Initiate and oversee strategic planning, innovation, and initiatives in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Manage all operations of the library in the absence of the Library Director and Associate Director.
  • Teach library instruction classes and serve as a collection development subject liaison, as needed.
  • Participate in research help desk rotation for on-site and electronic reference, including some evening and weekend shifts.
  • Represent and advocate for the library within the College and the community.
  • Engage in scholarly activities and professional service commensurate with expectations for tenure-track faculty.
  • Engage in educational opportunities and work to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library science, or the equivalent, from an ALA-accredited program at time of application.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Minimum five years of library experience in post-secondary, academic setting.
  • Minimum two continuous years of experience in managing a multi-person unit of full-time, permanent employees
  • Extensive experience teaching one-shot or workshop sessions in a post-secondary, academic setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, with strong analytical skills, innovative problem-solving skills, and a commitment to service excellence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reference services.
  • Clearly articulated and demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and equity.
  • Working knowledge of current and emerging professional library principles, methods, procedures, and best practices, especially in relation to information literacy instruction and reference.
  • Demonstrated professional accomplishments, growth, scholarship, and service consistent with the Associate Librarian faculty rank.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience with introducing and managing change within a complex, rapidly changing organization.
  • Evidence of leadership and active involvement in the library profession.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations, including marginalized or minoritized communities.
