Description of Department:

Penfield Library is a dynamic, innovative, and learning-centered environment serving students, faculty and staff at SUNY Oswego. The Library supports campus curriculum, teaching, and research, and is a member of the SUNY Library Consortium as well as the ACRL Diversity Alliance (http://www.ala.org/acrl/issues/diversityalliance). Sixteen full-time faculty and professionals, 6 adjunct faculty, and 15 classified staff support a well-established liaison program that provides collection development, specialized reference, and information literacy instruction in all curricular areas. The Library is evolving, currently in the process of exploring future campus partnerships, reexamining its organizational structure, and migrating to a new library services platform.

Description of Responsibilities:

The Access Services Librarian (Senior Assistant Librarian) will

  • Lead and manage the processes and operations of the access services unit, including circulation, course reserves, and stacks management.
  • Serve as the expert for the access services components of the library system.
  • Assess these processes and operations, and prepare reports in order to (a) improve efficiency or the user experience (b) promote and improve the use of library collections and resources, and (c) communicate the work of the department to the library and/or college as a whole.
  • Design, implement, and participate in initiatives to advance the work of the access services unit, in collaboration with library colleagues. Current initiatives include migrating to a new library services platform, expanding reserve holdings of textbooks and other course materials, and staff professional development.
  • Directly supervise one senior library clerk, who oversees a unit of 5 full-time clerks plus student workers.
  • Serve as liaison to assigned academic departments, with responsibility for subject specialized collection development and instruction.
  • Participate in Research Help Desk rotation for on-site and virtual reference, including some evening and weekend shifts.
  • Engage in educational opportunities and work to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

In addition, the Access Services Librarian will be expected to demonstrate the potential for excellence in librarianship, scholarship, and service; commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Librarianship/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program by time of appointment.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated interest or engagement with social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues, through professional or community experience.
  • Two years of experience in a full-time position, supervising permanent employees (not necessarily in a library setting).
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team.
  • Experience in access services (student or clerical work acceptable).
  • Ability to effectively adapt to and use new technologies and software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Alma library services platform.
  • Experience supervising student workers.
  • Experience migrating to a new library management system.
  • Experience with reference service, collection development and/or instruction.
